Duluth Made Popcorn

Our History

Duluth Candy Co is a locally owned business based in Duluth Minnesota that has been running for over 15 years. We’ve grown from a small neighborhood favorite to supplying over 45 retail and hospitality locations, but our mission remains simple: make small-batch popcorn the right way using quality ingredients and care.

We’re not a big corporate snack factory. We’re Duluth food lovers dedicated to authentic, flavorful popcorn made right here at home.

A Timeline

  • April 2010
     Fannie Rose Candy Shop opens at 103 E Superior Street in downtown Duluth. Founded by John Hartwick and Pat Garofalo, the shop is styled after an early 1900s candy store and named after Fannie Rose, a woman who once operated a hat shop and lived in the same building. The store features handmade chocolates, soft serve, vintage candy, and gourmet popcorn.

  • May 2010
     The grand opening celebration includes a ribbon-cutting and giveaways. The popcorn becomes a fast favorite among locals and tourists.

  • 2010 to 2019
     Fannie Rose grows into a downtown staple known for its Duluth Mix popcorn, caramel corn, and nostalgic candy atmosphere. The popcorn program gains traction as the store expands its offerings and reaches new wholesale accounts.

  • November 2019
     Fannie Rose rebrands as Duluth Candy Co. with updated branding, new packaging, and a stronger focus on wholesale popcorn. The physical storefront remains the same, and the product recipes stay true to the original.

  • December 31, 2020
     Duluth Candy Co. closes its retail location due to challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The business continues to fulfill wholesale and online orders through the end of the year.

  • May 2021
     David and Tami Siebert announce they are taking over Duluth Candy Co and plan to reopen the store with the same popular popcorn and candy recipes. Their goal is to grow the wholesale side while maintaining a small retail presence.

  • June 1, 2021
     Duluth Candy Co. officially reopens under new ownership at the same location in downtown Duluth. The store continues offering favorites like Duluth Mix, caramel pecan, and cheddar jalapeno, while expanding its reach in wholesale.

  • 2022 to 2024
     Duluth Candy Co. sees growth in its wholesale popcorn program, now carried in more than 45 stores, hotels, breweries, and gift shops across the region. The brand receives attention for its packaging and locally made quality. Seasonal products and community engagement continue to be part of the company’s focus.

  • 2025
    New owners emerge, and Duluth Candy Co. pivots to focus solely on its gourmet popcorn, relocating from its Superior St. location to a new production facility in downtown Duluth.
